About Us
About 30 years ago, what is now known as Open Arms Christian Ministries, Inc. started out when a local farm family sold 10 acres of land to the Indiana Christian Children's Home located in Ladoga, Indiana. Through a few men with a vision, a group home was built as an extention of ICCH. The single brick, split-level home looked just like most homes in the area. But this home was unlike others in the area, it was special. It gave a loving home to boys and girls, mostly teenagers, who needed a place to live and recieve much needed love and guidance in their lives. After Open Arms had separated from ICCH in 1985, Mike Girton became the first Director of Open Arms Christian Ministries.
In the spring of 1992, new leadership came to Open Arms. Mr. Vern Reed took over as Administrator and with his vision of what the ministry could become, Open Arms grew; new buildings were built,
including a new administrative office, a larger group home and a duplex for staff housing. New programs also broadened the influence that Opem Arms would have on the young lives that needed their services.
Under the direction of Vern Reed, OACM grew and touched the lives of many youth through the group home. In a short time OACM introduced a comprehensive foster care program. In 2003, OACM introduced what is now Turning Point Education Center.
In 2007, Open Arms lost their leader, Vern R. Reed to a heart attack and in 2008 Mr. Ken Mulpas took over as Executive Director and stayed on until the Vern R. Reed Memorial Chapel was completed in November of 2009. In February of 2010, Ken was called to lead a ministry in Ohio and Mr. Martin Corey, who has been a long-time family member of Open Arms took on the position of Executive Director.
