Foster Parenting
Love is the single biggest requirement for a prospective foster parent. A foster parent should be prepared for both the joys and the challenges of this kind of parenting.
In addition, all couples wishing to be foster parents must be Christian, married heteroxexual couples, Christian singles, divorced or widowed men or women, employed or have a stable income from another source, and must be 21 years of age or older.
Our youth have the same needs and wants that all children possess. As a foster parent, one would be expected to be understanding, patient and trusting, and able to provide a safe, secure, stable, loving home for the foster child.
Foster parents are required by the State of Indiana to receive thirty (30) pre-service training hours taught by Open Arms staff. After the initial 30 hours, parents are required to obtain twenty (20) hours of training annually thereafter. Training is offered through Open Arms. However, Open Arms also encourages parents to receive training at the regional, state, and national level as well.
